Let’s hear it for another meal that sounds like something you should never eat, prepared in a way that your abs and taste buds can agree on (insert rejoicing hands emoji here). For this one, first see the recipe for my “Three Bean Texas Turkey Chili,” cut the ingredient list in half, and craft a batch of that. This topping is the heart and soul of the dawg, adding a hearty signature to its leisurely feel. I won’t talk this one up too much, as the flavor will speak for itself and I dare not hold you back from a good all-American favorite!
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 15 – 20 minutes
Yields: 6 dawgs
What to Use:
- 6 lean turkey bratwursts
- 6 (100% whole wheat) hot dog buns
- Mustard, to taste
- 1/2 batch Three-Bean Texas Turkey Chili
- 1/2 red onion, chopped
- 1/2 cup fat-free cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1–2 tablespoons whole wheat breadcrumbs, to the desired crunch
What to do:
Preheat the gas grill to a medium-low setting. If using a charcoal grill, be sure to allow the coals to burn until they form a layer of white ash on the surface.
Place bratwursts on the grill, turning often with tongs, and let cook for 15 – 20 minutes or until fully cooked through.
Remove bratwursts from the grill and place them into whole wheat buns. Add mustard, to taste.
Add Three Bean Texas Turkey Chili topping with a large spoon, then garnish with onion, cheese, and breadcrumbs.
Let the meat cool, and the cheese melt for 5 minutes before serving. Tear it up as finger food, or fork it by plate!
